Cute but prepare to sewApr 17, 2012
By stealth916 My daughter chose this to spend some of her birthday money on. The bear arrived in a simple pink box (similar to a doughnut shop box but smaller), a nice little touch. Inside the box was the bear, the fiber fill, and a birth certificate to be filled out. The birth certificate is of reasonable quality (high gloss card stock) and suitable for framing, according to my daughter :) On the opposite side of the birth certificate are the simple instructions. Also included was a small plain white T-shirt (bear sized), and two puffy fabric 'wishing stars' (purple and yellow). These are to be wished on and placed into the bear for safe keeping.
The arms, legs and head seemed to have a little stuffing already but we filled them up first, then the main body. There was no problem stuffing the bear. There was plenty of fill included in the kit, with a little left over. The bear has an inner fabric envelope which holds the fiber fill. That fabric envelope zips closed after filling by way of a zipper that does not have a pull tab but instead has pull string. Then after zipping the inner envelope closed, it is time to velcro shut the outer body of the bear, so that it doesn't look like it has a big rip in the back. This is where the problem lies.
The velcro is completely and totally useless. I have seen and used all types of velcro in my day. This is the worst velcro knockoff ever - it can barely be considered velcro at all. This is typical Chinese quality - they go to some lengths to make and package a product of reasonable quality, and then fall flat on a low cost but crucial detail, which completely ruins the total effort. Even without stuffing the bear completely so as to relieve tension on the velcro strap, it was incapable of remaining closed - at all. So we stuffed the bear plumply, and sewed shut the outer body using some pink thread. It now appears seamless.
Aside from the missed promise of 'sew free' - the bear seems to be made reasonably well and for less than $9, is a fun project that turns into a real toy. But I suspect that if you are not prepared to sew this shut, you are going to have a pretty disappointed child at the end, and that is why I only gave three stars.
